Matching Mole was formed in 1971 by Robert Wyatt, the former drummer and vocalist of Soft Machine, after his departure from the band due to a back injury. The band’s name is a playful pun on the French translation of Soft Machine — “Machine Molle” (soft machine), cleverly inverted to “Matching Mole.”
The group became one of the key acts in the Canterbury Scene, known for their experimental approach blending psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and jazz fusion.
